Consultant for Village Agriculture Assessments for Sustainable Agriculture in the Dawna Tenasserim Landscape (DTL). Myanmar

1.Background
WWF Myanmar was established in 2013 and is working to conserve the country’s biodiversity and build a sustainable future for people and wildlife. The focus is on promoting an inclusive green economy within national policies, and sustaining and protecting biodiversity and ecological connectivity of the transboundary Dawna Tenasserim Landscape (DTL) through an integrated landscape approach, and the Ayeyarwady river basin through an integrated river basin approach. 2.Consultancy objectives
Develop and carry out an assessment of model villages for sustainable agriculture, provide recommendations for improving existing farming systems, and a step by step guidance for making farming systems more sustainable. Consolidate lessons-learned from assessments in model village into a simple how-to-manual to guide future assessments in other villages in the landscape. Because of the range of farming systems being used in strategic villages and the land degradation issues raised by these systems, it is anticipated that the consultancy be carried out by a team comprising one international or Myanmar-based expert in sustainable agriculture and 4 national experts: (1) traditional food crops, including taungya system, (2) tree crops (trees in traditional agroforestry systems, trees crops grown in plantations), (3) soil conservation, and (4) gender/social science (ideally with experience in nutrition and food security).
3.Required Profile
Lead Consultant (International or Myanmar-based Consultant)
Essentials:
· Extensive experience in sustainable agriculture assessment and implementation
· 5 years of relevant work experience, preferably 10 years of experience
· Demonstrated understanding of traditional farming systems and the livelihood strategies of forest communities, especially in subtropical Southeast Asia.
· Fluency in English and experience in writing similar reports and preparing knowledge products
· Sound understanding of community dynamics and livelihoods.
· Willingness to travel for weeks in the field collecting information and interviewing stakeholder
· Strong team leaderships skills and experience
Desirables:
· Candidate based in Myanmar or with work experience in Myanmar strongly preferred
· Knowledge of Myanmar and Karen language a distinct advantage
· Established network to support engagement with stakeholders required for the study
Team Members: (Four national specialists)
National experts will have expertise in:
(1) Traditional food crop systems – including taungya system
(2) Tree crops – plantations and agroforestry systems
(3) Soil science and/or soil conservation.
(4) Gender/Social Science (preferably with experience related to nutrition and food security in rural Myanmar)
National experts should have at least 5 years of experience working in agriculture in Myanmar or neighbouring country. National experts should be able to work in both English and National language. Expertise in Karen language is a desireable.
